Here is a time-line of some of the most important Google algorithmic updates from time-to-time :


  • Google Caffeine :

Rolled out in August 2009
The Google architecture of caffeine was designed to return all the results faster and in a better-optimized way with the constantly changing information across the world-wide-web.

  • Google Panda :

Rolled out in Feb 2011
Panda was related to the quality of your content marketing skills like blogs, guest blogging and various social media specific content. Also poor navigation and extreme advertising levels started to hamper website rankings in Google SERP, after the update was launched.


  • Google Penguin :



Rolled out in April 2012
            It lead to the complete discouragement of Black-hat SEO tactics like paid linking, links   from spammy directories, link trading, spammy comment links and links unrelated to the niche of your site.

  • EMD Update :

Rolled out in Sep 2012
Exact Match Domain update reduced the importance of the domain name matching. Earlier, if your domain name exactly matches with the keyword then your site may easily climb the SERP rankings. For ex : “besthotelinjaipur.com” may easily rank at the top position for the keyword “|best hotel in Jaipur”. But after this update, the importance of an exactly matched domain with the query phrase, reduced a lot.

  • Hummingbird Update :

Rolled Out in Dec 2013
Hummingbird ensured your site must be mobile responsive, otherwise your rankings will go down. In addition, it was the first update to introduce contextual search to the search results. Search engines interpreted queries, which identified as the most important keywords from a search. For example Restaurants in Jaipur now also returned results which containing coffee shops.
       


  • Pigeon Update :

Rolled out July 24, 2014
            Pigeon update was specifically related to the improvement in local search results. It was   more of a city or region-specific update with reference to Google local businesses.  

  • Mobilegeddon Update :

Rolled out on April 21, 2015
It was rolled out keeping in mind about the increasing importance of Mobile devices on World Wide Web. It said that your site must have a mobile-friendly version. Many points were emphasized like scrolling only from top to bottom, low bandwidth site accessibility and 'jump-to-the-top' button must be present. It also said that, a site being mobile responsive also affects its desktop SERP rankings.
